Pope Francis, Death Penalty: Thoughts?

What do you think of this RCC shift? How will it impact you or your church? Daily Prayer for August 1

black-eyed susan flower

However, as the scripture says, “What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love him.” But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:9–10a, TEV

Lord our God, bless us all through your Spirit, that we may find certainty of heart in community with you under your rulership. May we keep this certainty, whatever course our lives may take, whatever battles and suffering may come to us, for we belong to you and you rule and guide us as your children. Watch over all who are still far away from you but who long for you. Watch over all who are good-hearted and sincere, even if they often do not understand you. Protect them, and let your kingdom come so that your will is carried out more and more by the many who feel compelled to seek for you and for the goodness and truth which are your will. May we and many others serve you with our whole lives. Amen.

A Second Time

Jesus asked his audiences many questions. What if we stop with Jesus’ questions and let them interrogate us? What if we ponder and pray over Jesus’ questions? Which is exactly what Matthew Croasmun does in his church-friendly and small-group-friendly book, Let Me Ask You A Question: Conversations With Jesus. Organized into five weekday exercises around the […]

BOOKS OF THE BIBLE – COLOSSIANS – PART 2 OF 2

July 26, 2018

Colossians 2
1 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; 2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Problems with the Prophets (RJS)

What does it mean to claim that the prophetic literature is authoritative, inspired, and inerrant (if you like that word)? Does it mean that the named prophet (say Amos) wrote a book now included in our Bible? Does it mean that the named prophet (say Isaiah) personally proclaimed all of the oracles contained in a […]

Apocalyptic Discipleship

What happens to discipleship in apocalyptic theology? One things seems clear to me: virtue ethics is shelved for later. But does apocalyptic discipleship look like? Philip Ziegler, in his new important study on apocalyptic theology, Militant Grace: The Apocalyptic Turn and the Future of Christian Theology, presents a case for an apocalyptic discipleship. A few opening quotations […]
